Benthic Foraminifera Diversity of the Abyssal Northwest Atlantic

چکیده

The species diversity of benthic foraminifera at four abyssal working areas in the Labrador Sea, Basin, and Southwest Azores is documented. One hundred fifty taxa (forty-three not assigned to a species) were found their was recorded. twenty-four (fifteen illustrated with optical and/or SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) images on twelve plates. material sampled during RV Sonne cruise SO286 as part IceDivA2 (Icelandic marine Animals meets Diversity along latitudinal gradients deep sea Atlantic Ocean 2). investigated biodiversity within key groups habitats North Atlantic. Thirty-two samples from sliced three full cores, six stations MUC (Multiple corer), analyzed. Given low sedimentation rates such environments assumed be Holocene late Pleistocene age. Due scarcity living specimens this study based total assemblages. Four species-based clusters are identified, which correspond areas. each cluster show specific characteristics markedly different those other clusters. It indicates that faunas heterogeneous. Three dominated by Epistominella exigua (Brady, 1884), recorded rare dominant many plains worldwide. faunal differences manifested long tail less important differing abundances E. exigua.

Distribution, Diversity and Abundance of Benthic Foraminifera of the Northwstern Persian Gulf

During ROPME Winter Cruise 2006, twenty six surface sediment samples taken from the Northwestern part of the Persian Gulf at depths of 13-77m were analyzed for their foraminifera content. A total of 93 species of benthic foraminifera were found in the study area. The foraminifera assemblages were dominated by Ammonia beccarii, Spiroloculina excavata, S. depressa, Quinqueloculina dimidiata,...

Paleocirculation of the deep north atlantic: 150,000-year record of benthic foraminifera and oxygen-18.

Benthic foraminiferal faunas in a piston core from 3331 meters at 44 degrees N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge show striking variations in the relative abundance of species. Uvigerina peregrina, which is broadly distributed today in the South Atlantic and in the Pacific in water that has been long isolated from the surface, is absent in the North and Equatorial Atlantic at depths occupied by highly o...

Larger benthic foraminifera from the Middle Eocene

Larger benthic foraminifera (LBF) are common and diverse throughout the Paleogene sediments of southern Tanzania, but have previously been little studied. A recent programme of onshore drilling known as the Tanzania Drilling Project has recovered large proportion of this succession for palaeoclimatic and palaeontological study. The sediment is largely a hemipelagic clay with secondary gravity s...

Ba incorporation in benthic foraminifera

Barium (Ba) incorporated in the calcite of many foraminiferal species is proportional to the concentration of Ba in seawater. Since the open ocean concentration of Ba closely follows seawater alkalinity, foraminiferal Ba /Ca can be used to reconstruct the latter. Alternatively, Ba /Ca from foraminiferal shells can also be used to reconstruct salinity in coastal settings in which seawater Ba con...

Novel benthic foraminifera are abundant and diverse in an area of the abyssal equatorial Pacific licensed for polymetallic nodule exploration

The benthic biota of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ, abyssal eastern equatorial Pacific) is the focus of a major research effort linked to possible future mining of polymetallic nodules. Within the framework of ABYSSLINE, a biological baseline study conducted on behalf of Seabed Resources Development Ltd. in the UK-1 exploration contract area (eastern CCZ, ~4,080 m water depth), we analysed f...
